Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy for Achilles and Patellar Tendinopathy: Meta-Analysis and a Systematic Review of the Literature
Sports related injuries are a constant and disturbing problem for both clinicians and athletes. Among these, overuse injuries may constitute 30-50% of all injuries. Tendon injuries could be either acute or chronic in nature and the choice of treatment would depend on the specific pathology and diagnosis of the condition. Traditionally, emphasis was given on targeting inflammation.
However, there has been considerable advancement in the management of tendon disorders in recent years. With the term ‘tendinosis’ and ‘tendinopathy’ replacing ‘tendinitis’ treatment interventions like Eccentric exercises, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) has gained popularity among sports clinicians in treating tendon related pathologies.
